SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea has slammed the United States for what it called “shameless” actions that allegedly result in a mockery of the United Nations (UN). Pyongyang said Washington's actions were a “hideous criminal act” that the entire world should look at.
North Korea's mission to the UN in New York issued a statement against a planned US briefing on Pyongyang's alleged violation of sanctions. Instead, they stressed that what should be discussed at the UN is the alleged criminal actions of the United States itself. “The US has despised the very existence of the UN,” their statement said.
Pyongyang's ambassadors did not specify the exact action, but the statement came just weeks after the US operation against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. According to North Korea, such an operation is a nightmare for its leadership, which has long feared a so-called “decapitation strike” and alleged US plans to remove them from power.
North Korea added that the “irrationality and malpractice of the US” in using the UN for its own interests should not be tolerated. They also highlighted Washington's alleged “shameless illegal and immoral acts” and its exploitation of the UN for personal goals.
A few days before the statement, President Donald Trump announced that the US would withdraw from several UN organizations that were allegedly contrary to American interests. Currently, North Korea is under multiple UN Security Council sanctions due to its nuclear and missile programs.
