OFWs, along with the Bureau of Customs (BOC), appeared before NBI OIC Director Lito Magno to file a complaint against cargo forwarders who allegedly held and delayed the release of balikbayan boxes. Magno assigned agents to focus on investigations on companies involved in the delays.
According to Customs Deputy Commissioner Michael Fermin, the recommended cases include large-scale estafa. He explained that the real backlog occurred because the duties due were not processed and paid. About 10,000 OFWs were affected, and an estimated 52,000 boxes or 130 containers were not shipped on time.
Fermin further said that this is a large-scale estafa due to the number of victims and the large amount involved. The NBI promised to hold all responsible groups or individuals accountable.
Magno added that our modern-day heroes need to be protected. The NBI will ensure that they are given assistance to protect their rights and hard-earned money. An investigation has been initiated to find out the truth and identify those who should be held accountable.
