A United Nations report said that a woman in the world is murdered every 10 minutes by someone close to her. According to UN Women and UNODC, an estimated 50,000 women and children were killed by their partners or relatives in 2024.
The report said that 60% of murdered women are victims of husbands, partners, or relatives such as fathers, mothers, uncles, or siblings. Among men, only 11% are killed by someone they know.
The data also shows that this equates to 137 women per day, or one victim every 10 minutes. Although the number is slightly lower than last year, it does not mean that the number of cases has decreased because data varies from country to country.
According to the UN, the home is still the most dangerous place for women and children because it is where most murders occur. The highest number of cases comes from Africa, which reached 22,000 in 2024.
The UN added that online abuse such as non-consensual image-sharing, doxxing, and deepfake videos are also on the rise. They called for clearer laws to protect women and punish perpetrators before the situation becomes deadly.
