A 65-year-old grandmother in Kabayan, Benguet died after being buried under dirt while sleeping at her home in Sitio Tinaleb, Barangay Ballay. This happened early Monday morning during the height of Typhoon Uwan.
According to Kabayan local PIO Marilee Pacuyan, the first floor of the house where the victim was sleeping was covered with soil. Rescue efforts were difficult because the road was impassable due to landslides and fallen trees.
Based on the hospital's post-mortem, the cause of death was traumatic brain injury.
More than 199 people or 69 families were evacuated to evacuation centers in Kabayan. Others stayed with relatives as of Tuesday morning.
The town of Kabayan remains on red alert for immediate response to other incidents caused by Typhoon Uwan.
