Manila plans to build a Halal Town in Quiapo, near the Manila Golden Mosque, known as the home of the city's Muslim community. The project aims to turn the area into a cultural, culinary, and economic hub that will promote the halal industry and provide opportunities for Muslim-friendly businesses.
Mayor Isko Moreno and Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman visited the area to review the plan. According to Moreno, they plan to improve the surroundings and add new facilities such as pedestrian areas and al fresco dining zones that will not be accessible to vehicles. “We want to invest in the talent and culture of our Muslim brothers and sisters. Here, it is safe, clean, and there is halal food,” Moreno said.
According to Pangandaman, a Maranao princess and the only Muslim in the cabinet, the national government will support the project. Although the exact cost is not yet known, he assured that the DBM will help in finding funds. “We will find funds because this is important, especially since it is a big help to the economy,” he said.
He added that the project is timely because the Philippines will host the ASEAN Summit next year, and many Muslim visitors are expected to attend. The halal industry is a multi-billion peso business worldwide that will help not only tourism, but also Filipino jobs.
Halal Town will cover part of Globo de Oro, Arlegui, Bautista, and Elizondo Streets, near Plaza Miranda and Quiapo Church. Moreno promised to tighten security and sanitation to attract more tourists to visit the area.
