Amazon Web Services (AWS) experienced a widespread outage on Monday that lasted for nearly three hours, affecting many online services around the world.
According to AWS, the problem began when the number of system errors increased in some parts of their service. As of 6:35 p.m. (Paris time), most services were restored, but there were still some minor disruptions.
While the outage was ongoing, many online platforms and apps were affected. Some of these were video viewing, social media, and communication services.
The source of the problem was identified in the US-East-1 region in Virginia, USA, where AWS's core infrastructure is located.
According to a financial analyst, this incident shows how we have become dependent on technology companies like Amazon for our daily online activities—it's as if we're putting all our "economic eggs" in one basket.
