The Messenger app on Windows and Mac will be completely shut down before the end of the year. According to Meta, the service will end on December 15, 2025. After that, users will no longer be able to log in to the PC app and will be automatically redirected to the Facebook desktop app or website to read and send messages.
Before losing access completely, users will see an in-app notification or a 60 days notice before their account is blocked on the PC version of Messenger.
What to do? Meta recommends turning on secure storage and setting a PIN from the desktop app before switching to the web version of Messenger. To do this, tap the gear icon, go to Privacy & safety, select End-to-end encrypted chats, and activate Message storage.
For users of Messenger-only accounts, they will be redirected to the service's website where they can still continue chatting even without a Facebook account.
In 2014, Meta removed the chat feature from the Facebook app itself and made it a separate Messenger app for all users.
