The 54-year-old UV Express driver will face multiple charges after colliding with 13 motorcycles and a car on Commonwealth Avenue on October 17. In the incident, 1 was killed and 7 were injured, including a student.
The UV Express was destroyed and its tire burst after repeated collisions. CCTV footage shows the vehicle continuing to run despite being followed by a motorcycle. According to witnesses, the incident was intentional because it spun around three times before stopping.
One of the fatalities was a 34-year-old delivery rider from Quezon City. According to the family, the driver showed no remorse. Seven others were injured. The suspect is now in custody and has apologized, but his wife insists he is taking medication for high blood pressure and asthma.
The driver is being subjected to a drug test to determine if he has used illegal drugs. Possible charges include Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide, Multiple Physical Injuries, Multiple Damage to Properties, and Frustrated Homicide.
The Department of Transportation issued a decision that the driver's license has been canceled for life. The operation of UV Express, which was involved in the accident, was also suspended, and a show-cause order was sent to the operator to explain.
