Pirelli has conducted the first on-track test of a prototype MotoGP tire at the Misano World Circuit. This marks the start of their preparations as sole tire supplier for the 2027 season.
The test included riders from five manufacturers: Michele Pirro (Ducati), Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia), Dani Pedrosa (KTM), Takaaki Nakagami (Honda), and Augusto Fernandez (Yamaha). They used existing bikes but turned off the ride-height devices and changed the aerodynamics to mimic the 850cc bikes that will be used starting in 2027.
Each rider was given 7 sets of tires (different front and rear specs) with the same 17-inch rim size. They tested in dry and stable track conditions, where the asphalt temperature was ₱1,600 to ₱2,700 (equivalent to 25°C to 43°C).
The tires are being developed exclusively for MotoGP and will be manufactured in Breuberg, Germany using the same process used in the Superbike Championship. According to Pirelli Moto Racing Director Giorgio Barbier, initial feedback has been “very encouraging”, particularly in terms of grip, warm-up speed, and rider confidence. The program also includes a Sprint race simulation.
This is the first phase of Pirelli's development under a new five-year agreement with Dorna, which also includes being the sole supplier for the Moto2, Moto3, and Road to MotoGP talent cups until 2031.
