Road accident victims will receive higher benefits from Compulsory Third-Party Liability (CTPL) insurance, according to a proposal by the Land Transportation Office (LTO).
The new plan will increase the maximum coverage of CTPL from ₱200,000 to ₱400,000 per accident. To support this, it is expected that approximately ₱500 will be added to the annual premium of passenger vehicle operators.
For those who want to obtain a professional driver’s license for light vehicles, a four-hour practical driving course is required that also includes lectures on road safety and courtesy, in addition to theoretical and practical exams.
If driving heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks, a 32-hour competency course with an exam will be required. The proposal also includes shortening the required holding period from four years to two years before obtaining a professional license.
Consultations with the transport sector are currently underway and the final version of the proposal is being finalized with the Department of Transportation and Insurance Commission.
