Nigeria deports 60 Chinese, 39 Filipino scammers

Nigeria has deported 102 foreigners, including 60 Chinese and 39 Filipinos, who were convicted of cyber-terrorism and internet fraud, according to its anti-corruption agency.

According to the report, there are also those from Kazakhstan and other countries who are returning to their countries of origin. Additional deportations are expected in the coming days.

The deportees were among 792 suspects arrested last December in an operation on Victoria Island, Lagos. Of that number, over 192 were foreigners.

According to the investigation, foreign syndicates are using Nigerian accomplices to find victims online. They often target Americans, Canadians, Mexicans and Europeans, through phishing scams that demand money or sensitive information such as passwords.

It is estimated that billions of pesos are lost from this type of online scam, and experts continue to warn against cybercrime syndicates that exploit the country's still weak cybersecurity.
