Perplexity AI on August 12, 2025, offered to buy the Chrome browser from Google for $34.5 billion, or about ₱2.1 trillion. This is more than double Perplexity's current valuation, which is between $14 billion and $18 billion.
Perplexity AI did not disclose how they will fund the offering, but they said that multiple funds are willing to finance it in full.
The offer includes Perplexity's commitment to keep the Chromium engine, which powers Chrome, open source and to invest $3 billion or approximately ₱186 billion in this project.
Perplexity also promised that it would not change Chrome users' default settings, including the default search engine, so people can continue to use Google search if they want.
This news follows mounting pressure on Google to either reduce its search monopoly or sell Chrome, along with other big Perplexity offers over the past year.
