
An Army soldier died after undergoing so-called “reception rites” with senior members of his new unit, the Philippine Army confirmed on Monday.
The victim was identified as Pvt. Charlie Patigayon, a new soldier in the 6th Infantry Battalion. According to the report, Patigayon collapsed after the reception rites, a tradition performed to welcome new members of the military community.
He was immediately taken to the nearest hospital but was declared dead due to kidney failure. The PA stated that they have started an investigation to find out if anyone is responsible.
According to the PA statement, they strictly enforce the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 and zero-tolerance policy against hazardous activities. They also said that those involved were immediately removed from their positions while the investigation continues.
The Army added, if proven to have committed a mistake, those responsible will be held accountable according to the military justice system and existing laws. They also provided assistance and support to the victim's family.
