
The Manila Police District has said that the explosion near the PNR tracks at the corner of Dagupan Street and Tayuman Street, Tondo on Sunday afternoon was not caused by a bomb.
According to Police Lt. Col. Gilbert Cruz, based on initial investigations by the EOD and Bureau of Fire Protection, the explosion came from an air compressor and not an explosive device.
It was first reported that four people were seriously injured in the explosion around 2:30 p.m. Jam Mariano, a firefighter and medic, said that one patient had his hand amputated, one was hit in the jaw, and another senior citizen had a punctured cheek.
Cruz added that the injured were found dismantling the compressor when it exploded. They were allegedly beating it to extract the copper that could be sold.
Jay Dela Fuente confirmed that the number of injured has reached six. The Manila City government is covering their medical expenses, which are expected to reach ₱150,000–₱300,000 depending on the condition of the victims.
