Authorities in India have arrested a man who set up a fake embassy and posed as a ambassador to defraud investors.
The suspect has been identified as Harshvardhan Jain. He set up the fake embassy in a bungalow in Ghaziabad and created fake documents to make it look legitimate. He even put up flags of fictional countries such as “Ladonia,” “Poulva,” “Seborga,” and “Westarctica.”
The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh Police raided the embassy and arrested Jain there. four vehicles with fake diplomatic plates, fake passports, stamps for 34 countries, 44 lakh rupees (P2.9M) in cash, and an expensive watch were seized.
According to the investigation, Jain offered jobs and business deals in exchange for large payments. He is also suspected of being involved in money laundering using shell companies in UK, Mauritius, and UAE.
Jain is currently in police custody and being investigated on fraud charges. Authorities warn: be wary of investment deals that seem too good to be true.
