The fun of four young hikers turned to tragedy at Budlaan Falls, Cebu City on Saturday, July 12. While walking around the Butuanon River, the water suddenly rose and overflowed, stranding them.
One of them, a 21-year-old man from Barangay Kamputhaw, drowned after being swept away by strong currents. He was immediately taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, according to authorities.
The three hikers were rescued by the Special Rescue Force of BFP-7 after they were found among large rocks next to the waterfall. The rescuers used a rope bridge to save them even in the midst of bad weather.
According to the investigation, two groups of hikers asked for help from the authorities. The victim who drowned was part of another group from Cordova.
Authorities advise the public to contact the barangay or hire a tour guide when hiking in mountains or waterfalls, to ensure a safe trip.
