The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will allow cashless payment on the MRT and LRT using GCash, PayMaya, debit, and credit cards starting July. With the new system, users can simply tap their mobile phone or card on the turnstile, eliminating the need to purchase or reload a Beep card.
This is part of the plan for an automatic fare collection system that will facilitate payment and provide a more fast and flexible payment method, similar to those used in other countries. This step is in response to the order of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to make public transportation more accessible.
There will be a pilot testing and information drive before the official launch. DOTr is continuing to coordinate with transport operators to ensure smooth implementation of the new system.
