The Meralco Bolts recorded a win over the hot NLEX Road Warriors, by a score of 108-92, in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup. In the match held at the PhilSports Arena, Meralco improved to a 5-5 record, while NLEX's six-game win streak ended.
CJ Cansino led the way with 20 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 1 steal, while Chris Newsome had 21 points and 5 assists. According to Cansino, "I always challenge myself to be consistent, and the veterans and coaches have been a big help in bringing out my best."
The game was still tied at 54-all in the third quarter, but Meralco's lead suddenly ballooned after a 10-0 run in two minutes, led by Bong Quinto, Chris Banchero, Cliff Hodge, and Newsome. In the fourth quarter, Cansino ignited a personal 11-point run, including a four-point play and seven free throws.
NLEX was led by Robert Bolick with 22 points, 6 assists, and 4 rebounds, but also had 3 turnovers. JB Bahio and Kevin Alas each had 14 points. But it wasn't enough to stop Meralco's hot offense.
Meralco's victory was the result of strong defense and consistent offense in the second half, according to coach Luigi Trillo. As a result, NLEX failed to secure its seventh straight win.
