According to police, the bus was carrying nearly 70 passengers, beyond its normal capacity. While navigating a curvy road, the driver lost control, causing it to fall off a cliff and crash into a tea plantation. Photos of the accident show the bus in total disrepair—the roof, sides, and seats were torn off.
Deputy Transport Minister Prasanna Gunasena said that the injured were immediately taken to two hospitals. Residents in the area helped a lot by immediately helping the victims before the authorities arrived.
One of the survivors said he was in front of the bus and luckily suffered only minor injuries. He said, "The bus swerved left while making a curve, then suddenly fell into the ravine."
According to data, up to 3,000 people die every year in road accidents in Sri Lanka, making it one of the countries with the most dangerous roads in the world.
