The ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro arrived at a US court in New York on Monday, days after he was captured in Caracas in a sudden US military operation. Maduro, 63, faces narcotrafficking charges along with his wife, Cilia Flores, after they were forcibly taken out of the country.
Maduro was closely guarded by armed authorities as he was taken to court. Meanwhile, interim leader Delcy Rodriguez changed his tune and offered cooperation with Donald Trump, while thousands of Maduro supporters rallied in Caracas. Venezuela's military recognized Rodriguez and called for calm after the bloody operation.
Trump declared that the US was in control of Venezuela, emphasizing the need for the country's access to oil. Given Venezuela's largest oil reserves in the world, global markets are expected to be affected. As a result, Venezuela requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council as the country's future continues to be uncertain.
