A quiet night on Gibitngil Island, Medellin, Cebu turned to tragedy when the ground shook due to a magnitude 6.9 earthquake. One of the survivors, fisherman Wilson Pilones, rushed his family out of their home. But amidst the chaos, he heard the crying of his granddaughter, Briana Grace, four months old.
Nearby his son, Marwen, a large rock fell from the mountain, completely destroying their home. Digging with their own hands, Wilson and his neighbors found his son, daughter-in-law Katherine, and grandson Jacob, six years old—but they were no longer alive.
Briana Grace is the only miracle of the family. According to Wilson, it was God's mercy that saved the baby. She is now in the care of her grandparents.
Before the tragedy, Jacob often drew pictures of their family. In one of the drawings, he drew Briana Grace with angel wings, seemingly signaling a miracle to come.
Despite the sadness and loss, the life of Briana Grace—a miracle baby in the midst of tragedy—remains a source of hope for the Pilones family.
