Heavy rains since October 3 have caused landslides and floods in Nepal and India, killing 63 people. In Nepal, 43 people have died and five are missing, according to the Disaster Risk Authority. The Illam district was the hardest hit, with 37 killed in landslides.
Residents in Kathmandu were also worried after rivers overflowed and several houses were submerged. Authorities used helicopters and boats for rescue. As a result, hundreds of thousands of pesos worth of properties were damaged and many travelers were stranded after roads were blocked.
Prime Minister Sushila Karki declared a public holiday and urged everyone to avoid travel for safety reasons.
Meanwhile, in India, at least 20 people have died in Darjeeling after flash floods and landslides. Houses and bridges were damaged, and rescuers were struggling to reach the affected areas.
According to experts, climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of such disasters, especially during the monsoon season.
