Philippine tennis star Alex Eala was eliminated from the 2025 US Open after a second-round loss to Spain's Cristina Bucsa, 6-4, 6-3. Eala, ranked world no. 75, made 21 unforced errors and failed to capitalize on her break points.
Eala had a 4-3 lead in the first set, but failed to convert two break points. In the next game, Bucsa scored with a forehand and an ace that marked the beginning of her dominance. In the end, Bucsa took the set after Eala made an error.
In the second set, a double fault by Eala gave Bucsa a 3-2 lead. Although she briefly caught up, she could not maintain the momentum. Bucsa broke serve again in the seventh game and ended the match.
Despite the loss, the US Open was still a big victory for Eala. She became the first Filipina to win a singles match at a Grand Slam after defeating seed no. 14 Clara Tauson in the first round. Besides that, she is already known for her Cinderella run at the Miami Open where she also defeated former world no. 1 Iga Swiatek.
