The Bureau of Customs (BOC) will conduct a inspection of 40 luxury cars belonging to the Discaya family hidden in a warehouse. The Discayas are known for their construction firms with large flood control projects.
According to Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno, the BOC will immediately begin an investigation to ensure that the vehicles were legally imported and the correct taxes and duties were paid. They can use a Letter of Authority (LOA) to inspect commercial establishments or warehouses. If the vehicles are on residential property, a court order is required.
In previous interviews, Sarah and Curlee Discaya showed off their collection of luxury cars, including Cadillac, GMC Denali, Ford Bronco, Mercedes-Benz, Bentley and Porsche. They said that some of the vehicles were imported from the United States, and some were used only as showing the client their capacity for the project.
The Discaya family has been linked to many flood control projects in the country. In Iloilo City, the mayor reported several projects that were not completed or damaged. In Pasig City, their St. Gerrard Construction Corp. was investigated for possible fraud, substandard materials, and contract anomalies.
Since 2022, nine Discaya companies have secured contracts worth approximately ₱30 billion, including two top contractors with ₱100 billion flood control contracts. The government continues to investigate projects and possible corruption in the DPWH and other agencies.
