Nintendo has officially confirmed that it is working on more movies and TV adaptations. In addition to the scheduled Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 in April 2026 and Legend of Zelda live-action film in May 2027, they have other projects that have not yet been announced.
During the annual meeting, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said that the company preferred to be hands-on in making movies, rather than just leaving it to other production companies. This is to maintain the quality and authenticity of each show.
Just as the Super Mario Bros. Movie was a huge success in 2023, grossing over $1.3 billion, Nintendo aims to expand access to its popular characters. This is also part of its plan to further strengthen its core business that combines hardware and software.
There is no official confirmation yet on which franchise will be next, but many fans are hoping for a movie for Metroid, Kirby, or Donkey Kong.
Furukawa added, “We are actively working on visual content projects, and we invest in it ourselves. We want to make sure that the films that come out using our characters are of high quality.”
