Apple is considering using artificial intelligence (AI) from Anthropic or OpenAI for a new version of Siri, according to a report by Bloomberg News. Previously, Apple's own AI was the plan, but now, they are looking at other options.
The report said that Apple is in talks with the two companies to use their large language models (LLMs). Apple also wants to train these models to run on its cloud infrastructure during testing.
Apple's investigation into third-party models is still in the early stages and no final decision has been made on whether to use them. Anthropic declined to comment. Apple and OpenAI did not respond to Reuters' questions.
In March, Apple said it would delay AI improvements to Siri until 2026. According to a previous Bloomberg report, there has been a major shakeup in Apple's executive team. Mike Rockwell is the new head of Siri after CEO Tim Cook lost confidence in John Giannandrea over product development.
At its Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple chose to show off simple updates like live translations on calls, rather than major AI projects. According to Craig Federighi, they will now open up Apple's AI model to third-party developers, and they will also offer their own code completion tools alongside OpenAI's.
