
Lawmakers are proposing a bill to tighten restrictions on the use of e-wallet apps for online gambling. According to Rep. Jonathan Keith Flores of Bukidnon, it has become too easy to gamble online using just an e-wallet, which is why
Flores stated that e-wallet platforms are becoming a gateway to addiction. He clarified that he is not against e-wallets, but direct links to gambling apps should be removed. Some e-wallets even offer loans aside from top-up options, which only worsens the situation.
He added, many families have already been affected by online gambling. There are youths and breadwinners drowning in debt, sometimes even resorting to theft. That’s why he wants to make the process of loading funds onto gambling sites a bit more difficult so it won’t be too accessible.
This is not yet a total ban, said Flores, but if the situation worsens, Congress may impose stricter measures. He also urged the BSP and SEC to investigate e-wallet apps linked to online gambling.
Meanwhile, Rep. Rolando Valeriano of Manila has a stricter proposal. He wants to ban online gambling and revoke the licenses of operators. For him, gambling should only be onsite, under the regulation of PAGCOR
