
“How to Train Your Dragon”, a live-action version of the popular 2010 animated film, has topped the North American box office after earning $83.7 million in its opening weekend. It stars Mason Thames as Hiccup, a young Viking who befriends the dragon Toothless. Experts say it's a great start for a remake of the animated film.
Next on the list is Disney's “Lilo & Stitch”, which earned $15.5 million. To date, it has grossed nearly $860 million worldwide. The story is about Lilo, a young girl in Hawaii, and her strange alien friend Stitch.
The third is the new rom-com from A24 titled “Materialists”, starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans. It grossed $12 million, and was called the perfect “adult” movie this summer.
“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning”, starring Tom Cruise, came in fourth, with an additional $10.3 million in revenue. It has now reached $500 million worldwide.
Fifth place went to “Ballerina”, a spin-off of John Wick starring Ana de Armas as a dancer-turned-assassin. It also stars Anjelica Huston and Keanu Reeves, who returns as Wick. It earned $9.4 million.
