A 13-year-old child has been recorded as the youngest HIV case in Palawan, acquired through sexual intercourse, according to a report by GMA Super Radyo Palawan DYSP. According to the City Health Office (CHO) and Amos Tara Community Center, the number of HIV cases continues to increase, especially among minors in the province.

Based on CHO data, there are 17 cases of HIV in children age 14 and under, including the youngest patient, a infant who was infected from his mother. Meanwhile, 391 cases were recorded in ages 15-24, 593 cases in ages 25-34, 187 cases in ages 35-49, and 22 cases in ages 50 and above. In all of MIMAROPA, Puerto Princesa has the most cases, with 709 out of the total 1,198 cases in Palawan since 1988.

The RedTop Center at the Ospital ng Palawan (ONP) is the only treatment hub in the province and currently has 1,210 patients. Despite the availability of free HIV testing, many residents reluctant to get tested due to fear or lack of information. Some are unaware of their HIV status, while others refuse treatment even though they are positive for the virus.

CHO and Amos Tara Community Center continue to encourage the public to get tested and use protection to prevent the spread of HIV. HIV testing is free and confidential, so it is important to be aware and take care of your own health.
