BYD and DJI Launch Roof-Mounted Drone System

BYD has partnered with DJI, a well-known drone manufacturer, for a new technology—a drone launch system that integrates right into the roof of a car. This system, called the Lingyuan or "Spirit Kite," is sold in China for ¥16,000 CNY (about $2,200 USD).

Thedrone system is installed in a thin 30cm-square box on the roof of the vehicle. With just a touch of the touchscreen, two doors open to reveal the drone launch pad. It can take off while driving and operate even when the vehicle is moving at speeds of 15 mph. It can track a car and return to the docking station automatically.

BYD and DJI aim to turn vehicles into mobile entertainment and exploration platforms, where real-time travel footage can be captured from above. The drone will transmit the video directly to the car display, making it easy to record, pause, and share the journey.

This technology is a major step in the fusion of automotive and aerial tech, providing professional-grade travel content to motorists. With touchscreen controls and autonomous re-docking, BYD and DJI are changing how we see and enjoy our journeys.

Currently, the Lingyuan system is only available in China.
