Pimentel Wants to Investigate Collapse of Bridges in the Philippines

After the collapse of the newly opened bridge in Isabela, Sen. Koko Pimentel to investigate the repeated collapse of bridges in the country. He passed Senate Resolution 1319 to hold accountable government officials, private contractors, and others involved in the project. It is said that the number of bridge collapses has increased, causing deaths, injuries, and significant economic damage. Blame is placed on sloppy engineering and design, use of substandard materials, lack of oversight, and possible corruption. Because of this, there is a call for stricter regulation on construction of bridges.

One of the latest incidents is the collapse of the P1.22-billion Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge in Isabela, just a few weeks after opening it. Six were injured and one is missing. On October 28, 2024, the Magapi Bridge in Balete, Batangas also collapsed due to the flood caused by Typhoon Kristine.

Moreover, on October 29, 2022, the Bantilan Bridge, which connects the Batangas and Quezon, due to strong water current. The list of broken bridges continues to grow, prompting even more calls for immediate action. Now, the action of the government is awaited to avoid such incidents in the future.
