Children Climbed the Mountain to Get the Bag of the Deceased Father

Two brothers in Argentina climb a mountain to retrieve the bag of their mountaineer father who died there 40 years ago. Inside the bag, they found old camera film, which gave them a glimpse of their father's last moments.

Guillermo Vieiro, 44, died in 1985 while descending from the Tupungato lava dome, one of the highest mountains in the Americas. Last year, a mountaineer Gabriela Cavallaro found her bag and informed her children Guadalupe, 40, and Azul, 44.

In February this year, the brothers decided to climb the mountain with Cavallaro and other guides to retrieve the bag at an altitude of 6,100 meters. During their expedition, they found the jacket, sleeping bag, water bottle, and two rolls of film belonging to their father.

For Azul, this journey is not only about getting the bag but also about getting to know their father again. "It's like he's reminding us that he's still here," he said. They also learned that their father and his colleague Leonardo Rabal was the first to climb the most difficult route of Tupungato.

The brothers plan to donate their father's belongings to a museum to share part of Argentina's mountaineering history.
