Sara Duterte has formally announced her run as President of the Philippines in 2028, amid the escalating issue of impeachment complaints against her. In a press conference in Mandaluyong, the Vice President announced her decision after months of silence on the issue. According to him, he is dedicating his "life, strength, and future" for the nation, and calls for the return of courage, faith, and compassion for every Filipino family.
Duterte, in his speech, highlighted a verse from the Bible and shared his personal reflections on responsibility to family and country. He also admitted his departure from the Cabinet in 2024 as Secretary of the Department of Education, following alleged differences of opinion between him and President Bongbong Marcos Jr.. He mentioned the issue of the national budget and his opposition to any form of corruption, even if it allegedly resulted in complaints filed against him.
Along with his announcement, a fourth impeachment complaint was filed in the Lower House of Congress against the Vice President, containing allegations of violation of the Constitution and misuse of funds. However, his camp insisted that the repeated filing of complaints does not automatically make the allegations true. Amid the controversy, Duterte has garnered support from several lawmakers and personalities, including Senator Imee Marcos, who said his candidacy clarifies the call of his supporters.
As the 2028 elections approach, it is clear that Duterte's announcement marks a new era in the Philippine political landscape. As challenges and discussions continue, his declaration is expected to heat up the issue of leadership, accountability, and direction of the country in the years to come.
