DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon inspected the critical infrastructure of Iligan City following the severe impact of Typhoon Basyang. His visit aims to ensure the safety and speedy recovery of the city from the widespread flooding.
Dizon ordered the immediate dredging of the Iligan River to increase its water-carrying capacity. According to him, the river overflowed due to recent heavy rains, which caused flooding. Due to the lack of equipment, he advised the local DPWH office to rent from contractors first to fill the gap.
Furthermore, he urged the district engineering office to expedite the clearing of debris from the roads to restore the flow of traffic and transportation in the city. This is essential for immediate access of residents and emergency assistance.
In Barangay Abuno, Dizon inspected the Panul-Iran Bridge which was destroyed by the flood. It is the main steel bridge connecting Iligan and Marawi City. According to him, a temporary steel bridge will be constructed immediately while the permanent bridge is funded in 2027. The temporary bridge is expected to be completed within 60 days.
Apart from the bridge, the flood mitigation structure underneath it was also damaged. “Two things need to be fixed here in Barangay Abuno: the bridge and the flood control system,” explained Dizon. This shows the DPWH’s serious steps to ensure public safety and restore normal life in the city.
