Nine students and three crew members were successfully rescued after being rescued from a dangerous situation at sea in Barangay Gumasa, Glan, Sarangani, on January 24, Saturday.
According to a report by the Coast Guard Eastern Sarangani, the students were conducting marine biology fieldwork in Sarangani Bay as part of their thesis when the incident occurred. Also on board the boat were three crew members of the MBCA GWEEN who were also rescued by the rescue team.
The investigation revealed that the boat had traveled from Lower Malok, Barangay Labangal, General Santos City, but experienced engine failure and damage to the hull due to rough seas, prompting authorities to seek immediate assistance.
The rescued were brought to the Horizon Beach Resort in Barangay Gumasa where they underwent medical evaluation by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and were found to be in good condition.
This incident has served as a reminder of the importance of sea safety, especially for students conducting fieldwork in rough seas. The Coast Guard continues to intensify its rescue operations to ensure the safety of everyone in Sarangani Bay.
