A policeman from the Marikina City Police Station was relieved of his duties after a road incident involving a fire volunteer vehicle, which was allegedly obstructed by the policeman. The incident was caught on video and went viral on social media.
According to a statement from the Marikina City Police, the relief of the police officer is in accordance with PNP policies on internal accountability, even though the incident has been resolved amicably between those involved. Based on initial investigation, the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding on the road, but it was not disclosed where and when it occurred.
The report states that the truck driver's actions caused confusion as to whether the vehicle should stop or continue, prompting the police to move forward. The truck followed closely and honked loudly, startling the police. There was also a report of a near-miss with a tricycle during the maneuvers. Despite this, the tension was quickly resolved and ended in a peaceful conversation.
The owner of the fire volunteer vehicle offered a personal apology to the driver, and both parties agreed to resolve the incident. The police officer was first transferred to a Sub-Station, and subsequently to the Station Headquarters Support Unit (SHSU). He was also ordered to submit a written explanation to determine whether there was sufficient basis for a possible pre-charge.
Because of this, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) issued subpoenas to the police officer and the driver. According to LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus V. Lacanilao, the aim is to find out the real cause of the incident. “Fire trucks and other emergency vehicles play a critical role in protecting life and property. Blocking their path and inappropriate behavior is against the law and the principles of being a responsible citizen and public servant,” said Asec. Lacanilao.
As part of the legal process, those involved are ordered to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) at East Avenue, Quezon City, on January 29, 2026 at 1:00 PM, and submit a Verified or Sworn Comment/Explanation along with the relevant documents. The driver's driver's license has been temporarily suspended for 90 days and must be submitted to the LTO.
