Two cashiers and their alleged accomplices were arrested after a failed attempt to smuggle grocery items worth P36,766 into a supermarket in Ermita, Manila on Monday night. Authorities said the security team immediately took action after noticing the group's suspicious behavior.
Investigation revealed that the suspects went straight to the cashier lane where two employees were on duty. Although the products passed through the counter, they were allegedly not scanned and not paid for, allowing the items to slip through. When asked for a receipt at the exit, they did not show any, so they were immediately stopped.
The suspects were taken to the supermarket's security office and all grocery items were confiscated. They will face charges of qualified theft, while further investigation is ongoing to determine if there were others involved in the incident. The incident has reopened issues of internal security and workplace integrity, especially in the retail sector.
