The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has once again called for a halt and ban on the use of fireworks during New Year, as animals suffer the most from the loud noises and toxic fumes. According to PAWS, every year there are reports of missing pets, injured dogs and cats, and severe trauma caused by fireworks.
PAWS Executive Director Anna Cabrera shared that animals have more sensitive hearing, which is why they are more severely affected than humans. There have been recorded incidents where dogs have run away in fear, leading to serious injury or death. Birds and wildlife are also affected, especially smaller and more vulnerable creatures.
PAWS also emphasized that leaving pets outside during fireworks is dangerous. There have been cases of dogs choking on leashes, running away, or dying from stress. Typically, after December 31 reports of missing pets increase.
The group also warns against intentional and malicious harm, such as throwing fireworks at stray dogs and cats. This is clearly animal cruelty punishable by up to two years in prison and a fine of up to ₱250,000.
For those who cannot avoid fireworks in their area, PAWS advises keeping pets indoors, preferably in an air-conditioned and well-ventilated room, away from smoke and noise. You can use white noise or music, provide a safe hiding place, and use calming or anxiety wraps to reduce pets' fear and stress.
