More than 250 people are still being sought after Hong Kong's worst fire in decades, which killed 55 people at an apartment complex. Nearly a day after the blaze broke out, flames could still be seen from some windows as firefighters continued to work.
Authorities have begun an investigation into the cause of the fire, including bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh surrounding the building due to construction. Three men were arrested for allegedly negligently leaving foam packaging at the scene of the fire.
Many of the residents of Wang Fuk Court said they did not hear a fire alarm, so they had to knock and ring the doorbell to warn their neighbors. According to one, “The fire spread very quickly and there seemed to be a shortage of firefighting equipment.”
As the death toll rises, officials confirmed that a 37-year-old firefighter died after losing contact while battling the blaze. 61 people are currently hospitalized, with 15 in critical condition and 27 in serious condition.
Chinese President Xi Jinping sent condolences, while Hong Kong leader John Lee said they would begin immediate inspections of all housing estates under construction. Volunteers continue to provide help to residents affected by the tragedy.
