A woman from Cebu lost her partner to leptospirosis after flooding in Talisay City.
Verna Sangilan from Talisay City shared that her partner Jerwen Karl Abellana continued to wade through the floodwaters from November 4 to 8 because they live by the river. He had no injuries but was still infected with the disease.
Abellana's symptoms began on November 12, including fever, vomiting, and feeling weak. Two days later, she was taken to the ICU of a hospital in Cebu City. Despite having difficulty breathing, she continued to talk to their daughter about getting better.
The next day, Abellana died of multiple organ failure. She also had no prior prophylaxis after being exposed to the flood. Sangilan is now asking for help because they lack money for the hospital.
Mayor Samsam Gullas advised residents to visit the City Health Office if they have been exposed to the flood. More than 20,000 leptospirosis medications have been distributed to residents.
