Strong waves and rain from Typhoon Uwan on Sunday night carried sand and gravel from the seawall construction in Baseco Compound, Manila, straight into houses and streets.
According to Roberia Etol, sand and gravel entered their house so they had to clean it up immediately that morning. "Around 11 to 12 p.m., the sea got bigger. The waves were really big. They came over here. There were piles of sand there, they used to pile them up when the waves got bigger. They also entered the house," said Etol.
Residents joined together to clean the streets and used sand and gravel to line their houses against flooding. "We collect it and then we bring it to the house so that it doesn't get flooded. It will flood if we don't dump it," said Giovanni Tomedia.
According to Brgy. Ex-O Edmund Cayanan, the seawall is a DPWH project and they have already contacted the contractor to clean up the mess. "They didn't expect the water to rise that much, so they just put it there," he added.
Meanwhile, the Department of Public Services launched a cleanup on España Boulevard, while the DSQC cleaned G. Araneta Avenue in Quezon City. The cleanup operation will continue in the coming days to keep the community clean and safe, especially during the rainy season.
