The two men were caught by the PNP-ACG after they were caught operating a vehicle equipped with a IMSI catcher, a high-tech device used in text scams in Mandaluyong and Makati.
According to Police Brigadier General Bernard Yang, the device is used to obtain the mobile numbers of people in the vicinity. They then send phishing SMS such as "claim your reward" that appear to be from legitimate companies. When the victim replies and provides personal details, they are duped.
Confiscated from the suspects were IMSI catcher, SMS blaster, and other ICT equipment which were immediately handed over to the NTC. It was confirmed that they did not have permission to operate it. Investigation also revealed that the two did not know each other but were both ordered by a syndicate allegedly led by a Filipina woman with a Chinese husband.
The suspects are facing charges of unauthorized use of telecom equipment, violation of data privacy, and other cybercrime violations. Police are continuing their investigation to track down the masterminds of the operation and whether it is related to POGO groups.
The public is reminded to be wary of suspicious texts or emails, do not click on links, avoid sharing personal information, and report to authorities immediately.
