President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered various government agencies to provide immediate assistance to Cebu after a powerful 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on September 30. According to reports, at least 30 people died and many buildings, churches, and houses collapsed.
The Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has reminded agencies to use their Quick Response Funds (QRF) to immediately implement relief and recovery programs. If the funds drop below half, they can request an increase from the DBM.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) are focused on search and rescue operations and maintaining order to prevent looting. The Department of Health has also sent medical teams to hospitals, while the Department of Transportation has mobilized the Philippine Coast Guard with the ship BRP Teresa Magbanua carrying doctors, nurses, and emergency equipment.
The Coast Guard will also bring 8 K9 search and rescue teams and water desalinators to areas that have lost water due to the damaged pipeline. The DOTr reported that some hospitals and evacuation centers are almost out of water.
The earthquake struck the northern part of Bogo City at 9:59 p.m., sending shockwaves through the city. Many areas lost power and classes were suspended in large parts of Cebu.
