The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has begun examining donations given by some contractors to candidates in the 2025 Elections. This is in connection with the country's ongoing investigation into questionable flood control projects.
According to Chairman George Garcia, the political finance department is already reviewing data from the Statements of Contributions and Expenditures (SOCE) for May 2025. There is reportedly a list of possible contractors who made donations, and the Comelec is set to contact the DPWH to confirm if they are all government contractors.
Garcia added that they are not only looking at the 2025 SOCE but also the 2022 elections. This could include other donors such as those from the mining industry and government franchise holders.
In 2022, a contractor admitted to donating ₱30 million to a senatorial candidate. In total, 52 contractors are being investigated by the Comelec for possible violations of the Omnibus Election Code, which prohibits government contractors from donating to political activities.
