Nine Chinese nationals were caught in illegal mining in Masbate, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said. They were caught Monday at two mining sites in the barangays of Cabancalan and Pangle in Aroroy town.
Foreigners failed to submit proper documents to work in mining. According to the BI, some of them were overstaying and did not have work permits.
The suspects were brought to Manila for due process and will remain at the detention facility in Taguig while awaiting their deportation.
The BI collaborated with the AFP, PNP, and the local police of Masbate in the operation.
According to BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado, they will not allow foreigners to profit from illegal mining that damages the environment and the livelihood of local residents.
