A Filipina was rescued after being forced into prostitution in Malaysia over a fake loan of ₱200,000. According to the Bureau of Immigration, this is a clear case of debt bondage or debt bondage fabricated by recruiters.
The victim, 30 years old, worked for three months in a prostitution hub without pay and without food or allowances. Her Chinese employer also took all her travel documents and claimed that she owed ₱200,000 as payment for her recruitment.
Before this, the Filipina was promised a job as a waitress in Malaysia. Instead of going by plane, she and two other women were illegally brought to Kota Kinabalu from Tawi-Tawi by boat on May 29.
After seeking help from the Philippine embassy, the victim was able to return to the country on August 26 aboard a commercial flight from Kuala Lumpur.
According to the agency, the victim will be provided with assistance while the recruiters and human traffickers will be charged to be held accountable for their actions.
