Kevin Quiambao's rise to prominence in Gilas Pilipinas is no surprise to Coach Tim Cone. At the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup, the two-time UAAP MVP showed off his skills after becoming one of the team's most reliable scorers.
Quimbao averaged 12 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game, and finished third in Gilas scoring behind Justin Brownlee (20.6 points) and Dwight Ramos (16.8 points). Despite limited minutes, he recorded 17 points against Chinese Taipei, another 17 points against Saudi Arabia, and another 17 points with 4 rebounds against Australia where he led the scoring while Brownlee struggled.
According to Cone, Quiambao's role is important in building the new core of Gilas with Ramos, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo and Kai Sotto. He also mentioned that Quiambao is ready for big matches, and is gradually gaining confidence in his game.
Cone added that the team will continue to grow stronger because of young players like Quiambao. He said the goal is not just for one tournament but for the long-term success of Gilas Pilipinas.
Gilas will return to action this year in the first window of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, where the team is expected to be even stronger.
