The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has filed 23 cases against 23 companies, 56 company officials, and 17 accountants for improper tax payments. According to the BIR, they allegedly purchased fake receipts or "ghost receipts" to evade taxes.
BIR Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. himself filed the complaint with the Department of Justice (DOJ) on August 7. He said that businesses in various industries such as construction, manufacturing, food, electronics, entertainment, marketing, and retail are involved.
The BIR has failed to collect ₱1.41 billion in taxes due to illegal transactions by the said companies. The complaints will first undergo a thorough study by the DOJ before they are finally filed in court.
