The three billboards fell on the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) in Bocaue, Bulacan on Tuesday afternoon due to strong winds and heavy rain from a localized thunderstorm.
According to the report, the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. after PAGASA issued an advisory regarding “intense to torrential rainshowers with lightning and strong winds” in Bocaue and surrounding areas.
Barangay Tambubong secretary Jean Lazaro said a tornado caused the billboards standing next to the bypass road being constructed to fall. “The billboards couldn’t handle it, the wind was too strong in the area,” he added.
No injuries or damage to houses or power lines were reported. Billboards on the expressway or houses did not fall. The barangay advised other operators to roll up their tarpaulins first as a precaution.
Meanwhile, the group of advertisers announced that they are coordinating with local authorities and site operators to ensure public safety. As of 7:30 p.m., clearing operations in the area had not yet begun.
