A Filipino green card holder was arrested in Long Beach, California on Friday after allegedly sending money to the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
The suspect has been identified as Mark Lorenzo Villanueva, 28 years old, who is now facing a charge of attempting to provide support to a foreign terrorist group. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
Based on the investigation, Villanueva allegedly sent 12 payments totaling ₱94,000 (equivalent to $1,615) over a five-month period using Western Union. This money was sent to two individuals believed to be connected to ISIS members abroad.
According to the FBI, Villanueva had a conversation on social media with two people who claimed to be ISIS fighters. During their conversation, Villanueva allegedly said "It is honorable to fight and die for our faith. This is the best way to get to heaven." In addition, he also said that he had bombs and knives. Upon his arrest, the FBI found an object that resembled a bomb in his room.
Authorities reminded that these are just allegations and Villanueva is considered innocent until proven guilty in court.
